Beer: Manly Or Taking Away Your Manhood

The social construct around beer has made this alcoholic beverage one of the most popular drinks to drink. From IPA lovers to good ol Natural Light people love their beer. One of the most convenient and relaxing ways to enjoy this drink is a nice refreshing shower beer (you know who you are 😉) 

Although this drink has been around for centuries, and has been drunk by cultures around the world, could this delicacy be detrimental to your health? Let’s find out…


The History Of Beer Production:

Beer is said to have been created by the Sumerians of ancient Mesopotamia about 5,000 years ago. It said that beer was originally brewed with things like dates, pomegranates, and indigenous herbs creating a harsh tasting beverage. This original harsh taste likely contributed to the manliness of the drink. Beer became a large part of the Sumerians diet as they trusted the beer more than the water supply as the water was largely contaminated with animal feces and other waste. 

It wasn't until the 1600’s that hops began to become popular and were used in the brewing process. This was mainly due to the high amount of money that could be made from producing hops as 1 acre of hops was more profitable than 50 acres of arable land.  In 1710 a law was then imposed that nothing other than hops could be used to brew beer as hops were far more “wholesome” than other bettering agents. 

The Endocrine Disrupting Compounds In Beer:

Hops is one of the main ingredients that is used to brew beer. There are two main compounds within this plant (phytoestrogens) that lead to the highly estrogenic effects that it has:

  1. 8-Prenylnaringenin - This is currently the STRONGEST KNOWN PHYTOESTROGEN KNOWN TO MAN!
  2. Xanthohumol - a flavonoid that is derived from the female flowers of the hops plant

Studies have shown that 8-prenylnaringenin is the strongest of the estrogenic compounds in all plants. In fact, it is so powerful that women who touched the hops plants with their bare hands began to experience menstrual problems. Xanthohumol is another one of the main estrogenic compounds in this plant. Xanthohumol has been shown to be able to directly inhibit the production of testosterone inside the leydig cells. 

This isn’t just when beer is drunk in excess as drinking any alcohol in excess is a stress on the body and can effectively lower testosterone levels and increase estrogen levels. Even moderate drinking levels have been shown to have estrogenic activity in both rats and humans

Toxic Compounds In Beer:

The main mycotoxins that have been found inside of beer are  B trichothecene deoxynivalenol (DON), deoxynivalenol-3-β-D-glucopyranoside (D3G), and zearalenone-14-sulfate (Z14S). 

DON and D3G in particular have been shown to be in the highest amounts in beer and surpass the tolerable daily intake with just moderate beer consumption

Some of the potential health effects of DON and D3G include: 

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • abdominal pain
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Fever
  • Growth Retardation
  • Gastrointestinal Illness
  • Chronic Autoimmune Diseases

And this is just the beginning of a rather long list of ailments that have been directly connected to these mycotoxins.

Alternatives To Beer To Enjoy:

When looking for alternatives for beer there are a fair amount of options that are available. Some of the most endocrine friendly alcoholic beverages (when consumed in moderation) are: 

  • Cane Sugar Derived Seltzers 
  • Potato Vodka
  • Aviation Gin
  • Berry Based Gin
  • Wine (look for low oxalate wine like that from Dry Farm Wines)
  • Brandy
  • Rum
  • Tequila
