How Much Does Poop Weigh? How To Easily Do Poop Math

Nothing is better than the amazing feeling you get when you take a massive poop. Unfortunately, poor bowel movements are extremely common. If there’s one thing that Americans can agree on it’s that we’re clogged up. Poop researchers have shown that constipation affects between 9-20% of Americans and it only seems to get worse with age.  Not to mention that poor bowel movements are much more common in women than men. With constipation as common as it is today, it’s no wonder that many of us are filled up with poop.

Poop Math: How Much Does Poop Weigh?

Are You Filled With Poop

Susan Goodman, author of the, “The Truth About Poop”, claims that for every 12lbs we weigh we produce 1oz of poop. So it is very dependent on your current body mass, but typically this equates to about 1lb/day for men and 14oz/day for women. It’s considered normal to poop anytime between 3 times per day to once every 3 days, so taking the average of this, most people seem to poop around once daily. Doing the math…

Men: 1lb * 7 poops/week = 7 lbs/poop/week
Women: 14oz * 7poops/week = 6 ⅛ lbs/poop/week

If constipation is defined as less than 3 bowel movements per week let’s say someone that is constipated is only having 2 poops weekly.

Men: 7lbs - 2lbs = 5lbs
Women: 6 ⅛ lbs - 1⅞ lbs = 4 ⅜

That’s over 4 lbs of poop stuck in your colon after only a couple of days! Now, I know what you’re thinking…  If you’re that clogged up, you’d expect the size of your stools to be much larger than normal due to you pooping so infrequently. Well, in reality quite the opposite is true, especially when you consider how many people have a good daily bowel movement.

The longer a stool sits in the colon, the more water is reabsorbed through the digestive system back into your body from the feces. Since poop is made up of about 75% water this results in smaller, hard stools. According to the Bristol Stool Scale, if you’re really constipated your poops will resemble small rabbit droppings, “separate hard lumps that are difficult to pass”. If you’re slightly less constipated it will look more like a bunch of grapes, “sausage shaped, but lumpy”.

Feel like your digestive system is clogged up? Give zuPOO a try and get rid of those extra pounds of poop!

Constipation Complications:

Constipation

Now having a rare bout of constipation is not a huge deal, especially when you have a healthy lifestyle. Today we’re all living fast-paced hectic lives and it's normal to experience constipation every once in a while after a big weekend out, or due to a change in food intake or water supply. The issue is when this becomes a frequent occurrence.

Bacterial Overgrowth

bacterial overgrowth

The longer your poop sits in your digestive tract, the more time it allows for bacteria to sit and ferment, literally feeding your intestinal bacteria. Over time this can contribute to bacterial overgrowth which can compound further worsening your digestion.

Toxic Buildup

Additionally, the longer your poop sits in your digestive tract, the more “toxins” that your body is trying to excrete get reabsorbed. Your liver normally secretes bile into the intestines which is attached to estrogen molecules to excrete excess estrogen. The longer the bile sits in your intestines, the estrogen is reabsorbed into your bloodstream. This can cause:

  • GI Tract Irritation
  • Weight Gain
  • Poor Nutrient Absorption
  • Inflammation

And this is just the beginning of a long list of potential effects that can happen from this toxic poop build up.

Colon Cancer

Lastly, low average daily fecal weight has been associated with an increased risk of developing colon cancer. The study found that stool weights under 100 grams (¼ lb) and slow bowel transit time had a much greater incidence of bowel cancer. The study suggested that bringing up stool weight  to 150 grams daily (about ⅓ lb) by consuming about 21 grams of fiber daily would significantly decrease the risk of developing bowel cancer. While we at UMZU are not a huge fan of many forms dietary fiber often found in whole grains and vegetables (stems & leaves), we’re huge fans of the fiber found in raw carrots, cooked bamboo shoots, or mushrooms. Eating a raw carrot salad a day can give you the exact amount of dietary fiber you need to stay on track along with eating in a way that support your body like The Thermo Diet.
