The Sober Curious Movement has been on the radar for a while. With celebrities like Joe Rogan doing Sober October, or Dry January to kick off the new year. However, it began to gain traction when the book “Sober Curious: The Blissful Sleep, Greater Focus, Limitless Presence, and Deep Connection Awaiting Us All on the Other Side of Alcohol” by Ruby Warrington came out in 2018.

Although being completely sober is not something that is attractive to many people who do not have addictive relationships with alcohol and other substances, dialing back on the amount that is consumed can have many benefits. 

*Note* - There are many studies that show that moderate consumption of alcohol is beneficial to one’s health for longevity, lower rates of CVD risk, and more. If you can consume alcohol in moderation (ie low to moderate amounts equating to 1-2 drinks at most) these benefits are present. It is when it is taken beyond moderation that alcohol consumption becomes detrimental to one’s health.

More Time For Hobbies

Although this one is not directly related to your overall health, cutting back on the amount of time that you spend drinking alcohol can dramatically open up time on your calendar for other things that you would like to do. 

Instead of hitting the bar after work and spending two, three, or even 5 hours drinking with your coworkers you could use that time to take up a new hobby. I personally have several hobbies that I partake in such as jiu-jitsu, skiing, hiking, resistance training, volunteering, fishing, cooking, and reading among others. Time is a finite resource, and it is the only thing that we can never get back. Using it to our advantage to do things we enjoy is necessary for a happy and healthy life.

More Money In Your Pocket

It is said that the average American spends $500-$1,300 per year, but I think this is a conservative number. If you are going out 2-3 times a week and having a modest 2-3 drinks each time at $8 dollars per drink that equates to $32-$72 per week. Multiply this by 52 for the amount of weeks in a year and that equates to $3,744 a year! Imagine what you could do with all that extra money!

Improved Health

Not only will dialing back a bit on your drinking habits have a positive impact on your time and money, but it will increase your overall health as well. Benefits of sobriety include:

  • Less Anxiety (most likely from less concentration problems)

If your lifestyle is currently on the opposite trajectory of the Sober Curious Movement and you decide that you would like to slow it down a bit then the following tips can help:

  • Get your friends on board - Creating a support system can increase your success for just about anything that you do. Not to mention doing it with friends can make it much more enjoyable. Talk to your circle and see if any of them would be up for giving Sober Curiosity a try!
  • Have a schedule to fill your time with other activities - Like we talked about previously, dialing back the drinking habits a bit can open up more time for other activities. Set up a schedule for the things that you would like to do and follow through with it. This will make it much easier to not be lofty and think about going out as you already have something else to do. 
  • Find people already on the path - If your friends are not up for the task then you might need to broaden your circle. Find people already taking part in the Sober Curious Movement. Check out Facebook groups, forums, and other social media platforms to find more people seeking out more sobriety in their life.

You don’t have to give up drinking entirely when experimenting with sober curiosity. You can still enjoy the occasional drink and reap the benefits that low-moderate alcohol consumption can have on your mind and body. Dialing it back a bit to open up more time for other activities, save some money, and improve your health is never a bad idea.
